WeWriWa before Christmas - Meet Medina

Father forgive me for I have sinned.  I have missed a week of WeWriWa, and must atone for this transgression.  I will read each snippet twice, absorbing as much fantastic writing as one humble sinner can, for the number I have missed, while I was away last week, cavorting with dragons and hobbits and riding rollercoasters with my family...oh, how I have fallen.  Sniff, sniff.

Oh, excuse me (slight blush) I didn't realize the confessional door was ajar.  Well, now you've heard my torrid confession, so we might as well push onward.  I am so happy to have you here at my humble blog.  This is another weekly sabbatical of Weekend Writing Warriors (here's the link) where you can find many interesting styles of writing to study and learn from, as well as be delighted by.   Authors from all over the world, share eight lines of their published work or works in progress.  So many styles to choose from, so many places they'll take you.  Can I get a "Hallelujah?"

This week, I have left Ena and Ravyn to fend for themselves back in Aigerach.  This week we shift forward a few years to my WIP, tentatively titled Zelera's Revenge.  I wanted to introduce you to another of my favorite characters.  Her name is Medina, and she's a harpy.  She has been flying over the ocean and checking out the forces from Rasport that are invading Aigerach...

Medina dropped down into the fog, following the clamor of angry, frightened voices.  She slid along the currents of air, to land on a ship’s yard.  The crow’s nest appeared empty, so she lifted off to land on the lip of the barrel shaped enclosure that perched atop the mast.

“Ah, what manner of monster are you?”

Medina peered into the barrel - a small lad cowered down, arms over his head.  He poked his head out over his arm to peek at her, then squealed, ducking his head back under.
“I’m not a monster,” she clucked, “I’m a harpy.”  She chuckled and tossed her head, flipping her auburn hair.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  1. I hope you didn't fall from the rollercoaster! That would be painful. O.o

  2. No, did not fall from roller coaster. Medina is friendly till she's crossed. But she didn't start out that way : )

  7. Harpy's can be a lot of fun as this snippet indicates. I've known a few in real life; mean spirited witches. Terrific snippet!

    1. Medina started out pretty cranky in Return of the Crown...but meeting Ravyn has given her an attitude adjustment (most of the time). She is a lot of fun, as you all will see as you get to know her better : )

You rock, Millie Burns. I love your intro. Do I guess correctly that you've seen the new Hobbit movie then?

  9. Delightful!!! I've not encountered a harpy before, but your character appears fascinating and fun! I'm not participating in wewriwa just now, but wanted to come and see what you've been writing about anyway. I'm never disappointed. Merry Christmas, Millie!

  10. Sounds like a friendly harpy, compared to some I've read of.

    1. She didn't start out that way...more of Ravyn's magic touch, softening up the tough : )

  14. Of course she isn't! She's perfectly normal, especially compared to small, squealing, wingless, male humans . . .

  15. ah, everyone's eyes have a different view of what they see. "What kind of monster..." Of course Medina doesn't see herself as a monster - I gather she is rather pleased with her appearance as well. I look forward to getting to know more about her.

  16. I'd be cowering too! I can see why she wouldn't want to be called a monster, but harpies *are* monsters.
