WeWriWa #4: There still be Dragons!

This is incredible...I'm on my 4th weekend participating in WeWriWa, and third week in a row!  This is kind of amazing, I'm actually keeping myself on task : )

If you happened upon here by chance, what is about to occur, is me sharing eight sentences from my WIP with you.  The cool thing is...lots of other fantastic writers are doing the same thing, and if you'd like, you can click here...Weekend Writing Warriors! to find their blogs and see what tantalizing tidbits they are posting.

Last week, Ravyn stepped outside the cabin to talk to the dragon Ena, whom she'd befriended years ago.  If you'd like to refresh your memory, click here First, then here!

“Ena stop, it’s okay, we’re safe!”  Ravyn sped across the ground toward the dragon, but the thrashing tail caught her in the middle of her chest.  The air whooshed from her lungs as she sailed through the air to fall in a heap on the ground.

Ronan burst out of the cabin brandishing a stout shillelagh.  He ran to the dragon, swinging the heavy wooden club overhead.  A second red dragon, larger than the first, careened down out of the sky and plucked Ronan up in its razor sharp talons.  The cudgel fell from his hands to fall to the ground with a passive thud.  Ravyn struggled to find her breath forcing in air past the ache in her chest.

So, I always love your comments.  Would you leave one, pretty please with sugar on top?  Have a great #eight Sunday!

Harpy Havoc

I hope you enjoy this scene from my WIP, tentatively entitled Zelera's Revenge. It gives you a glimpse into the types of characters that make up the world of Aigerach.

Medina loved flying. Nothing in the world felt so good. The wind caressed her, held her in its embrace, lifting her up to soar in the heavens. She had risen above the fog, and off in the distance she could see the lightening of the sky to a soft dusky blue. The sounds of gulls rose up to her through the mist, their screeching cries as they fought for whatever they found in the detritus of the sinking ships. She glanced out to the horizon once more, the sky glowing orange rimmed in gold. The sun glimmered on the horizon, peeking up its head for the dawn of a new day.

Medina dropped down into the fog, following the clamor of angry voices, frightened voices. She slid along the currents of air, to land on a ship's yard. The crow's nest appeared empty, so she lifted off to land on the lip of the barrel shaped enclosure that perched atop the mast.

"Ah, what manner of monster are you?"

Medina peered into the barrel. A small lad cowered down, arms over his head. He peeked out over his arm, squealed, then ducked his head back under.
"I'm not a monster," she clucked, "I'm a harpy." She chuckled and tossed her head, flipping her auburn hair. They boy kept his head down, his whole body shaking. Medina dropped into the nest.

"Ah," he cried. "Kill me quick. I don't want to be alive when you eat me."

"Eat you," she sneered, "you are nothing but skin and bones, why would I eat you?" She reached out a gentle hand and patted his back.

He lifted his eyes, peering at her freckled face. "You aren't going to eat me?" he breathed.

"Of course not, I never eat skinny humans, I prefer the fat ones," she leered at him.

He pushed to his feet, his hands groping for the pull cord to the alarm bell. Medina cackled, "Joke, boy. It was a joke. Apparently, it wasn't very funny." She smirked as the boy collapsed back down into the nest, the wind out of his sails.

"Wh-what are you doing here?" he asked.

"Checking to see what my enemies are up to," she said, raising an eyebrow. "And I find them running amok, plum wild out of their wits."

The boys eyes widened. "We were attacked in the middle of the night. The ships just started exploding, no one saw how it happened. It was...magic," he breathed. "Aigerach is filled with magic and monsters. None of us wanted to come here, but the King..."

"Ah yes, your King. How did Zelera manage to capture your King's heart?"

The boy looked down, "I don't know. Who's to say what makes a person fall in love. But, we're here to get her back, or die trying."

"Do you feel that strongly about her, willing to risk your life for her?"

He glared at her. "Why are you asking so many questions?"

Medina fluffed her feathers and pulled back, reading anger and distrust written across the boy's face. "I thought we were just talking."

"You're a spy. You're gathering our secrets." He jumped to his feet, yanking hard on the alarm bell cord. A sharp clanging rent the air.

Medina spread her wings, leaping to the edge of the crow's nest. She flapped her wings, blasting air into the boy's face. He covered his head under his arms. "You are an ignorant little cuss," she cried. "I had thought at first I would be able to call you friend, but I can see you cling blindly to your prejudiced notions. I hope you make it through this war my boy, you have no idea what you fight for."

She leaped into the sky just as a harpoon sliced through the air to her side. Old harpy tendencies popped to the surface, and she began a torrential stream of cursing that rained down over the ship, causing even the most veteran of sailors' cheeks to burn.

She hovered in the air, the open sea at her back, "You are all ignorant fools, fighting against magic to save one who is the greatest perversion of it!"

Flashback and Flashforward

Thank you Fel, for hosting a wonderful blog hop, where we can trip all over the place flashing back left and right, but don't have to be chemically induced to do it! I can't wait to read all the entries!

I am flashing back to November of this year...I participated in the wonderful magical prolific word inducing NaNoWriMo! I have not shared this with anyone yet...The first few paragraphs of Zelera's Revenge (the sequel to Return of the Crown) to be released later this year...so I'm flashing backwards and forwards and getting all dizzy. This is first draft, so still rough. Craving your opinions should you care to share them.

Ravyn squeezed her eyes tight, the silky fabric fell over her shoulders, caressing her as it slid down her skin. Her dreams came true today. Today she'd marry Blade.
The door crashed open.
Ravyn glimpsed her wild-eyed mother in the mirror before her. Her normally calm and patient mother rushed into the room, her hands clutching the dresser for support. Her breath came in ragged gasps. "Kes, Kestrel! Where are you?" Her voice rose into a shriek. Her stormy blue eyes devoured the room, hungry for her son, but it was empty save for Ravyn and Lady Angelique.
"Mom, Kes isn't here, he's with Nurse Mayweather." She took a step toward her wide-eyed mother, shivers of fear danced along her spine setting her senses tingling.
Lareina stared past her daughter, sinking to the floor. "They're gone," she whispered, "gone".
"That makes no sense. Where would they have gone? Today of all days. Kes is the ring bearer." Ravyn dropped to her knees and put her arms around her mother. "Surely they’re just working off some of his energy," she patted her mother's hand and kissed her pale cheek. Lareina began rocking back and forth, unheeding of anyone or anything.
Ravyn turned a nervous eye to her Lady in Waiting. "Angelique, go get my father, please."
Angelique nodded before she raced out the door, her slippered feet sliding across the polished tile in the hallway.
Ravyn slid her legs out to the side, her silky dress twisting and crumpling beneath her. "Mom, shh, it's okay. I'm sure they're just out in the gardens."
Lareina lifted a trembling hand and turned it palm up. Her eyes carried a weight of guilt that threatened to drown her in a sea of culpability. A crumpled piece of parchment emerged from her tight grasp.
"What is it?" She reached for the note, but her mother’s fingers still gripped it tight.
"No, no, it can't be," Lareina murmured. She stared past Ravyn still searching for signs of Kes.
Ravyn unclenched her mother's fingers and the paper scraped across her skin further grating Ravyn's nerves. Her stomach knotted and she spread the parchment out across her lap. You should have killed me when you had the chance. -Z

NaNoWriMo Success!

So, this month has passed in a blur. Words, words, tumbling from my head. A frantic daily push to win that thing called NaNoWriMo. I have to admit, it is worth the mind-numbing frantic finger cramping dash! My sequel has grown a little fatter, and for that I am thankful. I hit over fifty thousand words today around noon. A wave of relief washed over me, I did it! But, sloshing around behind me is a huge pool of words, ready to burst the dam. So damn it, the relief is short-lived.

I'm hoping I learned a little something about writing every day. I'm hoping I'll keep it up. Hope does spring eternal, doesn't it?

The reality of life is, that when there is pressure tremendous things can be done. You do or die! When the pressure is removed, old habits sneak back and it's easy to let the words linger in your mind instead of on paper.

So, I think I may have found a solution. I'm going to keep my Calendar on the month of November. I'll see that eight letter word, my pulse will pound and panic will set in. No, I have at least 1,600 words that have to be written, today! Yes, I'm sure this will work. The stores put up Christmas decorations in November anyhow...it'll be a snap to keep up my illusion.

With a Rebel Yell!

Oh, do I feel good! I wanted to participate in the Nanowrimo in two days, but didn't want to start an entirely new project, I wanted to use the process to get me focused on what we'll call Zelera's Revenge (for now). But, I didn't want to cheat, as I already have around 10,000 words down. But, lo and behold, I discovered this lovely category of Rebels, and found myself feeling right at home...how appropriate, that I should find myself a rebel ; )

So, here's the deal, I'm going to participate and add to my already 10,000 words and hit that damn goal of 50,000 new words to give me over 60,000 words, and I'll call myself a winner! No stigma, for I will revel in my rebel status! Yahoo!

I will try to update with some short little blurbs, letting you all know how its going. I'm so excited. If any of you are participating and would like to be my nanofriend...my username is Milster : )

The Next Big Thing!

Hot Damn! I was nominated for the Next Big Thing, and it makes my little heart skippy flippy with joy! The awesome Shell Flower of the fantastic TangentShell was kind enough to give me a little nod! So, I've copied the questions from her blog and here are my answers to the burning questions you all have about my WIP!

What is the title of your Work in Progress?
Oh, I'm not sure yet...Zelera's revenge? I dunno. She's a bad bad girl and she's back to make trouble. I'm about 99% positive that name won't stick, it doesn't have enough...!

Where did the idea come from for the book?
Zelera, the villain from Return of the Crown, of course is making a comeback, and if you thought she was nasty before... A lot of the old crew is coming back for round two and I will introduce a whole new host of characters to spice things up. Let the adventure begin!

What genre does your book fall under?
It's fantasy, sort of in the classical sense. Adventure, magic, fantastic creatures! The heroine's age places it in the YA group, but I'm hoping to write it in such a way that it'll be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Return of the Crown has a fan base as young as 9 on up to Grandma's and Grandpa's, who gladly thank you to not speculate as to their chronological years.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Oh, Jennifer Lawrence(Katniss Everdeen) would make an excellent Ravyn. Hayden Christensen(the youthful Anakin Skywalker) for Blade. Jim Carey would make such a killer Connor, due to Connor's love of disguises and great sense of humor. Katie McGrath(BBC's Merlin's Morgana) would delight as Zelera, beautiful lady who does wicked oh so well.

What is a one-sentence synopsis of the book?
Classic-style fantasy adventure brimming with magic, mayhem and new and engaging mythical creatures.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Return of the Crown was self-published, and I have not chased down any agents yet. It could go either way, and I'd still be a happy camper. It's all about sharing the story, however it gets out there!

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
I am a little over 11,000 words in. I write in the little cracks of time I can sneak into my day. I am hoping to finish the first draft by Christmas. I might just join the Nanowrimo folks this November. Now that I've written that down, it's going to help me meet my goal? Right?! What a great Christmas gift that'd be!

What other books would you compare this story to in your genre?
I believe this is similar to the Rogue Wizard series by Christopher Stasheff. Quests, mythological creatures, humor mixed in with the action. I have a strong female protagonist rather than a male.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?
My fans! Those wonderful folks who read Return of the Crown, started clamoring for more. I left the first book open at the end, hoping readers would want more, and by golly they do! Zelera's really outdone herself this go around. I can't promise you everyone will make it out alive this time...

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Dragons? Who doesn't like dragons? Will Blade and Ravyn finally tie the knot? Which character is going to Return to the Light?

Okay, so here're the five fine folks whose WIP I'm interested in seeing more of. Please take a moment to check them out! Tag--you're it!
