Warrior Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary Weekend Writing Warriors!  Give out a big old whoop and a holler!

I've been a part of the warrior tribe since June, and what a wonderful time I've had.  I've found some new authors to read, I've learned from others by reading some incredible words of art, I've become friends with wonderful folks from around this amazing globe, and most importantly, I've had fun!  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then click the button below and learn about this great group of bloggers.

I've been drizzling out bits of my WIP, still untitled as yet, and recently I've been sharing scenes with Medina, a beautiful and witty harpy character (her words, not mine) as she's checking out an enemy ship anchored off shore of her land of Aigerach.
Last week, we left off with Medina, chatting with a young soldier, wondering how Zelera (a nasty witch) could make the king fall in love with her...

The boy looked down, “I don’t know.  Who’s to say what makes a person fall in love.  But, we’re here to get her back, or die trying.”

“Do you feel that strongly about her, willing to risk your life for her?”

He glared at her.  “What did you do to me, cast a spell on me?”

Medina fluffed her feathers, and pulled back to read anger and distrust written across the boy’s face.  “I thought we were just talking.”

Well, I hope you all enjoy this wonderful day.  Have a glass of champagne and eat a big box of chocolates.  It is an anniversary after all, and that seems like a great way to celebrate!  Or, crash a Superbowl Party and eat all the tasty snacks while you put your feet up, ignore the game, and read snippet after snippet!

  1. Oh, that Medina! Cool as a cucumber, "I thought we were just talking." lol

I'm getting a mental image of an older woman I used to work with (I adored her, by the way). Medina's voice has become that of the older woman, lol, and Medina's face is also that os the older woman.

Have you ever read "Women Who Run With the Wolves"? It's a book by Clarissa Pinkola Estes PhD, about storytelling and legends, lore and myths of women is all cultures over the ages. There is the "wise woman" that most cultures created --in spite of having male leaders, Medina strikes me as the wise woman... I might be waaaaay off base lol. Anyway, thought I'd share because I like it when people share thoughts with me. It helps me to judge where the readers' minds are going. Then I know if I have to steer them another direction. ;-)

    Good 8, Millie!

And I'm so glad you found us back in June!!

    1. I've never read that book, but it sounds interesting, and Medina is definitely a wise@$$ : ) Being a harpy, she's pretty tough and has street smarts. Also, being a female dominated race, and her coming out on top as the leader of the harpies, I think it's fair to say she's a wise woman.

  2. I really enjoyed how this dialogue played out. And the boy is clever as to question Medina and her motivation. :)

Will be celebrating with you today with a big box of chocolate ice cream!! :D

    1. That sounds like a great way to celebrate! The boy sort of got stymied by her appearance, but he's coming to his senses...

  3. This is so cool, Millie. I love how you show that the boy's fear is easing off by having him be bold enough to question a harpy. I see by her feather ruffling that bothers her a little, or at least catches her off guard. Clear and intriguing. You've only been with us since June? How the time flies :) Hugs to you, hon!

    1. Thanks Marcia. Medina does like to be in control : ) I sure do enjoy my Sunday encounters!

  4. This excerpt made me think of a scene from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Morgan Freeman's character asks Robin Hood (aka: the sexy-as-hell Kevin Costner), while he's sitting in a catapult about to be slung over a wall to who-knows-what on the other side, if the woman he's doing this for is worth it. And Robin answers that she's worth dying for. Awesome snippet, Millie! It's been a blast getting to know you and reading your fabulous excerpts every week. :)

    1. Well thank you Evelyn, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside : ) Medina is sure having a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that people are willing to die for Zelera.

  5. I enjoyed the exchange between these two, he is right to question her.

  6. Complete turn-around in the dialogue. Enough to stop the boy? Tune in next week. Wonderful eight, my friend.

    1. I'm so glad to hear that. Medina in particular is one of my favorites (of course, don't let her know I told you that, she's already got quite a big ego!)

  9. Interesting how the boy's mood changed - I wonder why? I really like the character of Medina, can't wait to read more. Excellent excerpt!

    1. Medina is getting such a big head with all these compliments. I'm going to have to clip her wings soon, she's gonna be outta control : )

  10. He is quite skeptical of Medina and she is so savvy. I just love the character. Excellent job as usual Mille!

I feel like you do, so glad I found this group. I've met some awesome people who are great writers. You being one of them.:) Who could ask for more?

    1. I really do look forward to each Sunday, even if it means waking up early to read everyone's snippets before the rest of the family wakes. Today, I am actually writing and reading late...as the Superbowl is so unworthy of my attention. Thank you for always stopping by and giving me your opinions, it means a ton!

  11. You mean, a spell to get his head out of his---never mind. It's probably just all the fresh air in the Crow's Nest!

I love Medina, so, so much!

    1. Sarah, that made me nearly spew my drink...Medina loves you right back, as well as your sense of humor and your near wonderful word choice. She'd approve : )

  12. LOL It seems she pushed the boy too far... or her spell is wearing off (those fluffing feathers...) Great snippet, Millie!

    1. I think she's been too sweet and calming. He's thinking there's nothing to fear from her...

  13. There may be a spell cast, but I don't think it's Medina's doing.

    1. You'd be right. Medina has magic associated with her, but not the ability to cast spells.

  14. It's got to be hard to go back on so much superstition and mistrust. I'm not surprised he's afraid of her, no matter how nice she seems.

    1. Yeah, he's got years of indoctrination behind him, that all magic is evil.

  15. I am intrigued by this harpy, she seems genuinely surprised that someone would be so enchanted with a girl that they would be willing to risk their life - and so genuinely perturbed that he questions her motives.

    1. Well, Zelera is not just a girl...she is a pretty evil lady who usurped the throne, encased her sister and her brother-in-law (the King) in a magic mirror, killed and tortured thousands, stole the only male harpy from the flock...anyhow, she's just having a hard time seeing anyone liking, much less loving the lady.

  16. Hmm... spells, but not one Medina could cast. I'm intrigued to know more. :)

    1. Yeah, harpies don't really cast magic spells, but their wings/feathers have power in them.
