Oh boy, it's Saturday evening, and I'm prepping my installment for Weekend Writing Warriors. This is always such a great time of the week for me. Not only do I get to share eight lines of my WIP with whomever should happen along, but I also get to read lots of fantastic snippets in a variety of genres. I never know what will be on the menu, and that always gets my curiosity peaked...my literary senses salivating...it makes me hungry for words and where they'll take me. I always leave satiated, but wanting more. If you want to know how to join the smorgasbord, or see the menu of this week's offerings, click the link HERE!!!
Last week, we left our harpy in a little fishing shack talking to some of her friends...Medina said the boy pulled the alarm bell and Joff asked her what happened next.
“You
should have seen all those crazy rugged sailors getting their shorts a-twist, and all over little old me.”
“I can
imagine. They are afraid of magic,” Joff
stated, shaking his head.
“Not
afraid enough if you ask me,” Medina crowed, “They shot a harpoon at me.”
Seamus
patted at the raw scrape along his cheek.
“They seem to be fond of those,” he growled.
“Then,
I got a bit mad, I said some things…,” She blushed, lowering her head and looking
up from under her lashes.
Joff
burst out laughing, “Did you teach those
sailors a word or two?”
Here's the beauty of writing and sharing. This is my first draft...and written during NaNo, where you are encouraged to write and not edit...which I did. I realized after getting this installment ready today, that I hadn't written of them shooting a harpoon at her...they had only lobbed cannonballs. So...I'll need to go back and add a little more excitement to her earlier encounter. I mention this, because you all are so sharp, I know someone would kindly and rightly point out to me, that she hadn't been shot at with a harpoon. Today, also introduced another character, Seamus, who happens to be a Selkie. Some of you might remember him from before, he's met Ena in earlier snippets : )
Sunday (today), I am heading off to my first Comic Con. I've never been to one, but it seemed like such a fun thing to do. I think I'm gonna go get my geek on : ) So, if I don't get to your tidbits today, please know within the next day or so, I'll make it happen!
I really like Medina's feistiness although that is one harpy you don't shoot harpoons at. I definitely want to read more of this story. Good 8.
ReplyDeleteNope, don't shoot at Medina...
DeleteShe's a saucy one, returning some choice words at the sailors in exchange for the cannonballs and harpoon they threw at her. And cool that you're heading to Comic Con! I've seen photos of those on websites, but never have gone. Looks fun. :)
ReplyDeleteComic Con was pretty neat, but extremely crowded. Medina is extremely saucy!
DeleteStupid harpoons. I'm really liking this character. Nice work Millie!
ReplyDeleteMedina's blushing right now, you all are giving her a big ego.
DeleteI like the way she seems contrite, these are very likable characters.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gemma : )
DeleteThis is adorable. Curse like a sailor but then be slightly embarrassed by it. LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteThat's our darling Medina : )
DeleteI hate it when people shoot harpoons at me! Great excerpt. Hope you have a great time at ComiCon!
ReplyDeleteLucky for Medina, it really doesn't affect her much, as long as she's paying attention.
DeleteNice! I love her!
ReplyDeleteAw, shucks.
DeleteBlushing? Our Medina?
ReplyDeleteWould that have anything to do with Joff? Hmmm?
Medina will flirt with any male, and Joff's a good-looking guy.
DeleteThis harpy seems full of (mostly?) unintentional mischief. I like her! :)
ReplyDeleteShe's definitely a mischief maker : )
DeleteHave fun at the comic con! Enjoyed the excerpt, love that she gets a bit shy and flustered.
ReplyDeletePeople watching was fun, there were some very cool costumes.
DeleteGreat dialogue-full of mischief. Thanks, Millie.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome!
DeleteEnjoy the Comic Con. I loved the humorous dialogue. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed : )
DeleteComic Con? I'm jealous! Hope you have fun and take lots of pictures.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first excerpt I've read and I already like the characters. Very light and playful, just as I imagine Selkies to be. :-)
Medina is a harpy, Seamus is the selkie. Joff is very human. There's all sorts of "characters" in Aigerach.
DeleteLol..OMG....I recognized these characters right away! You've done a great job of showing instead of telling, it's a delight and I don't even know the storyline yet!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it : ) Thanks for swinging on through!
DeleteI love their personalities and the way you have them interact with each other! I liked Medina's touch of guilt.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a blast at Comic Con! I'm grinning picturing you with your total geek on. :-)
I nearly spent too much money at Comic Con on things that I didn't need. Lucky for me, I managed to keep my wallet in my purse : ) Though, the NIghtmare Before Christmas original artwork would have looked lovely somewhere in my house...I'm sure of it.
DeleteShe did more than teach them some fowl (pun intended) language.
ReplyDeleteHee hee hee!
DeleteGreat dialogue interaction between the two. I like where your taking Medina. She's a bit of a spunky smart ass----in a cute way. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Murders of Polly Frisch
She is a bit of a smart ass, and she's perfectly proud to be so. Hmm, wonder where she gets that from...not her creator?
DeleteFun fun fun! I know the perils of NaNo first drafts, I'm using one myself for #8sunday! But you have me totally drawn in, so you gotta let us know when you publish this because I gotta read the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteWill do. I'll keep you all well informed! I'm hoping to finish and edit before end of summer...
DeleteSo funny! I wonder what she told them that's making her blush.
ReplyDeleteWords that would not be polite for me to repeat...nay, not polite for anyone to repeat : )
