A very Happy New Year to you! And you, and yes, you too! It's such a great time of year...we have a clean slate, a chance at a new start. One thing I won't give up though...is WeWriWa! Nosiree bob. I stumbled across this great group of authors this past year (one of the wonderful things that happened in 2013) and I decided to join them. Every week, we post 8 lines from either published work or Writings in Progress. We share with each other and learn from each other. It's super de duper. If you are interested in learning more about it, or finding more fantastic authors to follow...click the link Here! (See how I cleverly inserted myself into the fantastic author category : )
I've been sharing with you from my WIP, and you've been getting a peek at Medina, a fun and crazy harpy who lives in Aigerach. Last week, she landed in the crow's nest of the enemies' ship and started a dialogue with a young boy/soldier...he breathed, "You're not going to eat me." And here's her reply : )
“Of
course not, I never eat skinny humans, I prefer the fat ones,” she leered at
him, smacking her lips.
He
pushed to his feet, his hands groping for the pull cord to the alarm bell. Medina cackled, “Joke, boy...it was a joke. Apparently, it
wasn’t very funny.” She smirked as the
boy collapsed back down into the nest, the wind out of his sails.
“Wh-what
are you doing here,” he asked.
“Checking
to see what my enemies are up to,” she said, raising an eyebrow. “And I find them running amok, mad out of their
wits.”
So, drop me a comment. I'd love to hear what you think. And, if you're like me, and this month you have set a goal to finish the first draft of a WIP, let me know how you're doing. As I post this, I've only written a few words this past week (grr), but I plan on adding a thousand or two more words tonight. I'll let you know how that works out : )
Wonderful! I like the harpy's wit! Great character!
ReplyDeleteMillie, you are such a sweetie! " (See how I cleverly inserted myself into the fantastic author category : ) " Yes, I did see that--and thought how right you are! You are a fantastic author. When is this book going to be finished? I need to read it. :-)
Teresa my dear, I'm so damn close to finishing the first draft...then from there...well, you know how it goes. I hope to get it out this summer!
Deletea humorous harpy, I'm already taken by her character. Great 8
ReplyDeleteShe is a very funny girl : )
DeleteI never would have thought of creating a snarky harpy. ;D Great dialogue!
ReplyDeleteWell thank you so much. She's full of snark ; )
DeleteFunny and clever, i enjoyed their exchange!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gemma!
DeleteI love your harpy character. LOL. the personality comes right through. great job
ReplyDeleteThanks : ) She's just another of the favorites that take up residence inside my head!
DeleteGreat dialogue exchange. l wonder what she'll do next?
ReplyDeleteOh, if I'm kind and benevolent...you will see : )
DeleteSounds like looney tunes in the best way. Love the harpy and the skinny kid. So much fun. Thanks.
ReplyDelete: ) Thanks. This writer just loves having fun...and I guess it sort of bleeds into all my characters.
DeleteI love her sense of humor, so unexpected in a harpy (by me anyway). Excellent excerpt and Happy 2014!
ReplyDeleteThank you. She used to be just a nasty piece of work, as most harpy's are...but then she met Ravyn and the rest is history : )
DeleteYup, you've got another great character in Medina. I wish I could do humor as easily and cleverly as that! Great little piece to post for us :)
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you Marcia, that really means a lot to me. Hope your new year is starting out great!
DeleteI love the way you give your "monsters" a sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Sometimes I think monsters are just misunderstood : )
Delete*I* thought it was funny! I'm thinking that running mad is just how Medina likes her enemies to be. ;o)
ReplyDeleteYou got that right Kate : )
DeleteThe kid is an enemy? Then can she save him, please? I'm sure he's very sorry . . .
ReplyDeleteUnless we aren't on Medina's side (it's tough not to be, regardless---she's just that cool). In that case, you save him, please! :D
The kid is indeed from a land that just invaded Aigerach. And, they hate all things to do with magic...it'd be nice if she could save him : )
Deleteyes monsters are people too, or whatever, many stories show the "monster" as victim which is an idea I find fascinating
ReplyDeleteYup, monsters can be monsters...but people can be monsters as well : ) So why not the reverse?
DeleteI like the harpy:D
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like her, she grows on you. She has a lot of spunk : )
DeleteMillie,
ReplyDeleteI love the banter! Great scene to make you want to know more.
Thank you Karen.
DeleteHeh! It was a funny joke--but not, I imagine, when you're right there and someone is joking about eating *you!* Her last line definitely makes me wonder what's going on below them. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, the poor kid is not feeling real comfortable right now.
DeleteLOL! Fantastic banter. I can really see the two different states of mind. Well done.
ReplyDeleteLOL She sounds so energetic! I liked the last line, it makes you wonder what is happening below and what trouble she'll stir. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLOL Love it! Makes sense to go for the meatier ones! ;) Great snippet.
ReplyDeletehum, maybe she should eat him, he seems yummy.
ReplyDeleteGreat characterisation there.
